Join us for this seminar by Cláudia Lemos, a Visiting Scholar from the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil, titled ‘Narratives about democracy: the use of parliamentary storytelling in Brazil and in the UK.
Abstract
In this seminar, Cláudia Lemos will examine the type of language used by communication teams of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies and of the UK House of Commons. Her presentation will draw from a comparative analysis of the use of journalistic reports and social media by the institutional parliamentary communication units in Brazil and in the UK. The study is based around a case study analysis, which focuses on how the parliaments of the two countries told the stories of violent attacks against Parliament/Parliamentarians in the last few years: in the UK, the murders of MPs Jo Cox (2016) and David Amess (2021), which occurred during meetings with constituents, and of police officer Keith Palmer and 3 other people, killed by a terrorist outside Parliament (2017); and in Brazil, the invasion of the National Congress building on January 8, 2023. The presentation will identify the extent to which these units adopt a specific narrative, and the differences and similarities between the two countries.
