Dr Khemvirg Puente Martínez, a visiting scholar from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, will give a talk on his paper. This paper is titled 'Legislative Institutionalisation and Openness in Presidential Systems: the Case of Mexico.'
The abstract for the paper is below:
The transition to democracy in Latin America has been interrupted by the emergence of populist presidential leadership with authoritarian tendencies. Despite these challenges, legislatures have endeavoured to meet high standards of access to information, transparency, albeit with limited capacity to engage society in legislative processes. This paper describes the advancements and setbacks of the Mexican Congress in terms of institutionalisation and parliamentary openness during the democratization period (2000-2024).
